In 2000, with the co-operation
of Venetian glassmakers,
I made my first attempt at glass fusion.
I soon discovered
that glass making is an art full of secrets, which are passed
down from the teacher to his privileged apprentice, like from father to
son.
I realised that if I wanted to learn glass making to create my own art
works,
I needed to start experimenting with the different phases of glasswork
on my own.
After studying different
techniques of glass fusion I began buying second hand machinery
which I personally adjusted to develop my new art form.
The technique
for glass fusion is fascinating but complicated and complex:
it consists of cutting several pieces of glass into different shapes and
colours
to melt them together with oxides, glass dusts and enamels in order to
obtain
a composition similar to that of a painting.
The difficulty of this technique is that different types of glass
melted together often react differently.
After a numbers of experiments and a lot of patience I managed to achieve
today's results.
Nowadays I am working
on the research of new materials, which are compatible
with the difficult "temper" of the glass. I managed to obtain
good results with copper.
This passion which
started as a great adventure, made me wonder if my handiwork
could be considered as ART.
Several glassmakers
and art critics appreciated my handiwork either for its technique
or for its use of colour or for the subject represented.
At the "Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea Leonardo Da Vinci Terzo
Millennio",
organised by the International Accademy in Rome in July 2001, I won third
prize.
